Washington, DC, April 26, 2021: SMI announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Bill McCann as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board succeeding Glen Mandigo. Ken Wetzel has been named the Chief Operating Officer of the company and has been appointed as a Director of the company. Mandigo has assumed a Senior Vice President role and will remain on the company’s board.
“I am honored and excited to lead SMI. Glen has guided this company successfully and has set a high bar. SMI has never been stronger. Our team offers clients a unique combination of technical federal marketing and lobbying services that has withstood the test of time,” said McCann. “I couldn’t ask for a better COO than Ken Wetzel, who is a recognized leader at SMI. I am also excited that Glen will stay on as a Senior Vice President, continuing to work with both clients and his SMI teammates.”
“SMI has a long track record of success that predates me. I knew when I joined the firm that I would be working with a very talented group of consultants, lobbyists, and clients. I’m excited by the opportunity to take on a bigger role in helping continue SMI’s tradition of providing top-notch government relations services.” said Wetzel.
McCann joined SMI in 2005. In 2008, he was named COO and joined the board of directors. Prior to SMI, McCann worked on Capitol Hill for ten years, primarily serving as a chief of staff and a national security adviser. McCann received a BA in Government from Georgetown University and an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
Wetzel joined SMI in 2014 and was named a Senior Vice President in 2019. Prior to SMI, Wetzel served in a number of national security roles within the Department of Defense’s Manufacturing & Industrial Base Policy office and the US Army at Picatinny Arsenal. Wetzel received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Villanova University and an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology.
Founded in 1993 by Ted Lynch, SMI is a leading federal marketing and government affairs firm with an emphasis on securing and promoting federal research and development funding for companies, universities, coalitions and industry associations.
